What Fostering Really Looks Like

Fostering can feel like a big unknown if you’ve never done it before.

So what does it actually look like day-to-day?

What Fostering Really Looks Like

What Sloan & Finn Provides

We aim to make fostering as accessible and supported as possible.

We provide:

  • All necessary veterinary care

  • Preventative medications

  • Any and all supplies

  • Food & treats

  • Support for behavioral questions

  • Help with marketing and adoption placement

  • Guidance through every stage of fostering

You’re never left to figure things out on your own.

What Fosters Provide

Fosters are the heart of rescue.

They provide:

  • A safe, stable home environment

  • Daily care (feeding, potty breaks, exercise)

  • Structure and routine

  • Socialization and exposure to home life

  • Insight into the dog’s personality

This information helps us match dogs with the right adopters.

A Week in the Life of a Foster Dog

Every dog is different, but here’s a general progression:

Early Days:

  • Decompression

  • Quiet observation

  • Building a sense of safety

Mid-Week:

  • Increased comfort

  • Personality starting to show

  • Beginning to learn routine

By the End of the Week:

  • More confidence

  • Stronger connection with foster

  • Better understanding of expectations

Why Foster Homes Matter

Shelters are stressful environments. Even the best facilities can’t replicate a home.

Foster homes allow dogs to:

  • Relax and decompress

  • Learn normal household behaviors

  • Receive individualized attention

  • Show their true personality

This dramatically increases their chances of adoption.

What If It Doesn’t Work Out?

Not every placement is a perfect fit, and that’s okay.

Reasons may include:

  • Compatibility with other pets

  • Energy level mismatches

  • Scheduling challenges

We work with you to:

  • Problem-solve when possible

  • Transition the dog if needed

There is no judgment, only support.
